ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Efren Navarro hit his first major league homer off Justin Verlander, and Matt Shoemaker combined with two relievers on a four-hitter as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 4-0 Saturday night. Shoemaker (8-3) threw just 78 pitches through seven innings, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out five against a lineup that came in leading the AL in batting average, hits, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The only hits off the right-hander were Ian Kinslers first-inning double and singles by Eugenio Suarez and Austin Jackson. Kevin Jepsen pitched a perfect eighth and Jason Grilli got the last three outs. Jepsen has allowed only one earned run over his last 31 2-3 innings and 35 appearances. The AL Central leaders were shut out for the fifth time this season, and their division lead over Kansas City was reduced to five games. Verlander (9-9) allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and a walk. The 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner was the latest in a series of All-Stars that Shoemaker has more than held his own against this season -- including Cliff Lee, David Price, James Shields, Chris Sale and Yu Darvish. The rookie is 4-0 in those starts with a 2.27 ERA. Navarro found the seats above the 18-foot wall in right-centre on a 1-1 pitch from Verlander, who has given up at least one homer in 10 of his last 12 starts. On Friday night, Navarro singled home the go-ahead run against Drew Smyly in a 2-1 victory after the Tigers lefty struck out eight of his first 10 batters and 11 overall. Navarros homer came in his 79th big league at-bat. He drove in another run during the Angels two-run sixth as Albert Pujols scored on the rookies grounder to shortstop. C.J. Cron followed with a double that scored Howie Kendrick. Angels first-time All-Star Erick Aybar started in the cleanup spot for the first time in his nine-year career, going 2 for 3 with a sacrifice bunt. Left fielder Josh Hamilton sat out because of a sore left knee. Aybar came in with 51 RBIs, the most among AL shortstops, and was 9 for 27 in his career against Verlander. Nine-time Gold Glove winner Torii Hunter robbed Mike Trout of a hit in the first with a tumbling, shoestring catch in short right field. But Hunters fielding error in the eighth allowed Aybar to take an extra base on a single, and he scored on Kendricks double against Joakim Soria -- making his Tigers debut following Wednesday nights trade from Texas. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus received an automatic ejection from plate umpire Cory Blaser in the third after he came out of the dugout to argue a call that was reversed after a video review. NOTES: Verlander, third on the Tigers career strikeout list behind Mickey Lolich and Jack Morris, has 28 double-digit strikeout games in his big league career -- but none this year in 22 starts. This is the deepest hes gone into a season without one since 2006, his first year as a full-time starter in the majors, when he made 30 starts and had no more than eight Ks in any of them. ... The Angels optioned RHP Fernando Salas to Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled OF J.B. Shuck from their Pacific Coast League club. Shuck last played for the Angels on May 2 before getting sent down. ... Verlander was the second overall selection in the 2004 draft behind San Diego Padres pick Matt Bush, who never played in the big leagues. Three of the top seven selections in that draft have pitched no-hitters, including Homer Bailey (two) and Philip Humber (perfect game). Yellow Hydro Flask Sale . Team second Marc Kennedy and lead Ben Hebert plan to leave Martins rink after this season to join reigning national champion Kevin Koe. Its the first major move of whats expected to be an off-season loaded with significant roster changes. As for the 47-year-old Martin, who has national, world and Olympic titles on his glowing resume, he plans to take some time after the season to consider his future plans. "I cant confirm that Im looking for a new roster," Martin told The Canadian Press on Wednesday from Napa Valley, Calif. "But I can confirm that Marc and Ben are going to curl with Kev, yeah. I havent decided if Im going to curl again at all." The timing of the news is less than ideal for Koe and his current lineup of third Pat Simmons, second Carter Rycroft and lead Nolan Thiessen, who will try to put the distraction aside as they prepare to play at the world championship in Beijing this Saturday. Koe preferred to keep his focus on the upcoming competition and respectfully declined comment. Rycroft, whose wife is pregnant, has already said hell be taking a year off from the sport after this season. Simmons and Thiessen were not available for comment and their future plans remain unclear. Hebert declined comment and a message left with Kennedy was not immediately returned. Martin said it was unfortunate that the news surfaced during the season and before the world championship. "I sure wish none of this stuff (came) out," he said. "Im not exactly sure how it did but its too bad." With the Olympic season nearly complete, several roster changes are expected as teams prepare for the next four-year cycle. Team Brad Jacobs, which won gold at the Sochi Games last month, will be one of the rinks to beat next season. Whats uuncertain at this time is what ripple effect the new Koe lineup might have on teams throughout the country.dddddddddddd. The 2014-15 season isnt necessarily critical as rinks start to look ahead to the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but the sooner that players can lock in the better. Martin, Kennedy and Hebert teamed with John Morris to win Tim Hortons Brier titles in 2008 and 2009, going undefeated en route to the championship each year. They also won Olympic gold at the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Morris left the team almost a year ago and later joined Jim Cotters B.C. rink. Morris was replaced by Dave Nedohin and the current Martin lineup has enjoyed a strong season. Martin wasnt surprised at the pending departure of two of his teammates since they want to position themselves for the next Olympic cycle. "Having teams change and personnel change, thats just part of sport," he said. "Thats not unusual I dont think. Its just unfortunate that any of these changes -- and there are a lot of changes that are going to happen this year -- happen before the end of the (season). That should definitely happen in May." Martin added the moves make "perfect sense" for Kennedy and Hebert. The veteran skip expects to decide on his own future plans by the end of June. There is still one major event left on the curling calendar -- the April 15-20 season-ending Grand Slam Players Championships in Summerside, P.E.I. That competition was already shaping up to be an emotional one with Alison Kreviazuks announcement this week that it will be her last competition with Team Rachel Homan. The longtime second has decided to move to Sweden to be with her boyfriend. Joanne Courtney of Val Sweetings rink will join Homan, lead Lisa Weagle and third Emma Miskew next season. Homan is the reigning national champion and won silver at the world championship last weekend. ' ' '
